In this investigation of various principles formulated by the Rambam in Hil' Tefilla, we will focus our attention on the concept of a תפילת נדבה. Many statements of the Rambam indicate that there are 2 distinct categories of Tefilla, namely, חובה ונדבה. These represent 2 entities of Tefilla, 2 חפצות של תפילה. The significance of this conclusion is manifold. One cannot fulfill his obligation by substituting a Nedava. Nor can a Nedava be integrated into a Chova whene he remembers midway that he already davened. This new entity of Nedave must be created by חידוש דבר, a requirement that applies even to one who is in doubt as to wheter or not he has davened. No Nedava when no קרבן נדבה.
