In two places, Masechet Chulin 104b & Masechet Shabbat 40b the Gemorah establishes the principle that כלי שני אינו מבשל. In this shiur we will study the opinion of the Maharshal re: a דבר גוש, i.e. that there is Bishul in a Kli Sheini in the case of hot meat, e.g. if hot meat was sliced with a milchaga knife. How far did the Maharshal go? Is it בישול ממש or simply מפליט ומבליע? How did the Shach prove the Maharshal from the Tos' in Masechet Shabbat? Why did the Chavas Da'as reject this proof? The poskim prove that the Ramah - who rejects the Maharshal - is correct from the Gemarah in Chulin. Can the Maharshal be reconciled with that sugya? We will investigate the possibility that דבר גוש may qualify as Bishul re: Shabbat but not for בב"ח.
