In today's class we will examine the nature and practices of shiva, the 7 day mourning period after death, and explore the famous dispute between the Rambam and the Baalei HaTosafot over whether Aveilut shiva - the mourning proscribed for the week of shiva - is Biblical or Rabbinic in origin. As will be our practice, after examing the Halachic sources, we will conclude with a consideration of their philosophical implications
