For Masechet Ketuvot 5b, the sugya of Buah Rishona on Shabbos, we will study the definition of Melechet חבורה. Is this Netilas Neshama (extracting life-blood), Tzove'ah (dyeing), or Mefarek (breaking off one part that is attached to another) ? We will see that each alternative generates serious difficulties and questions. This study will lead to discussions about basic definitions and principles of Melacha on Shabbat.
