You mention in your talk that our first reference to the Bar Mitzva ceremony appears in the 16th century. Prof Yisrael Ta Shema z"l in a review essay of "Jewish Life Cycle" of Ivan Marcus points out that we have sources of the Bar Mitzva ceremony already in the 12th century. (Jewish Quarterly Review 87, 1-2 (1996) 233-239).
