Correction: I conflate two positions in the rationalist school. The Chatam Sofer says that the reason you bless on Friday night is because that is when you are calm enough to do it. The Siddur Or Zarua LaTzadik says the extreme position, that during the week parents sometimes curse their children and must reverse it. Also, in the shiur I make the claim based on the cited article that the first appearance of the custom is in Maavar Yabok. However, Maharil mentions it in Hilchot Tisha B'Av, and Magen Avraham cites it 559:1.
