Our goal for this shiur on Masechet Berachot 20b, is to define זמן גרמא for Tefilla, Kriat Shema, Tzitzis & Tefillin. The Rambam classifies Tefilla as שלא הזמן גרמא and it appears that the reason is that there is no moment of time that is excluded from Tefilla. However when we analyze the mitzva of Tzitzis as a Zeman Gerama, there is no moment excluded, yet the חיוב המצוה has a time element to it, i.e. a garment dedicated to night wear is excluded. It becomes clear that זמן גרמא is determined by the Chiyuv HaMitzva rather than its Petur. We will present 2 formulations of the גר"מ; the 1st defines the Chiyuv Tefilla as continuous, only the Kiyum HaMitzva is related to time. The 2nd defines the Kiyum HaMitzva as divorced from time.
