In this shiur entitled "Is Tisha B'Av a hybrid or an entity unto itself?", we will define the two dimensions of Tisha Bav, i.e. Tisha Bav as a Ta'anis Tzibbur, and Tisha Bav as a day of Aveilus. The hybrid nature of this day reflects the complex nature of the day insofar as each of the two elements that make up the essence of the day as a Halachik entity allows each of the two elements to engender חומרות of its own. The strict prohibitions of eating, drinking, and רחיצה can only be justified by Taanis Tzibbur, whereas the prohibition of Tefillin & Talmud Torah reflects the nature of the day as a Yom Aveilus. Yet, the day as a Yom Kina reflects the fact that Tisha Bav is a new entity unto itself, i.e a בריה בפני עצמה.
