One of the roles Geirim play in Am Yisroel is that they were able to access the lowest places that a Jew has no shaychus to. A Yid in his nature cannot go to such low places. In those low places he is able to raise the sparks there and bring them back to Am Yisroel. The arizal says all geirim were really at sinai they just got lost and farblunged along the way and eventually they make it back to Yiddishkeit.
