We need to re-evaluate our understanding of yiras ha’onesh (divine retribution). We are very weak in our mental ability to conjure up images of punishment. If we do not have a clear and healthy image of retribution and consequences then nothing will stop us from digging ourselves deeper into the pit of filth. The tremendous danger involved in skipping over the level of yiras ha’onesh. Three levels of yirah: fear of punishment, fear due to honor, and fear due to the perfection of closeness with Hashem. When we are in a low state only the fear of going to hell can stop us from sinning.
