We grew up being afraid of and trying to avoid yiras ha'onesh (fear of punishment). We should studying seforim that describe vividly what awaits us in gehinom (hell) and the suffering in the grave. We should beg Hashem to help us feel his yirah (awe) in order to come closer to Him by not sinning in daily situations. We should try to contemplate suffering and pain in our life time.
