Tanya, p86. Through a piece in the Tanya, the Ba'al HaTanya illuminates the theme of mitzvos explored in the sixth perek of Tiferes Yisroel. The nefesh habehamis (animal soul) stays at the same strength throughout our lifetime. Emunah (faith) does not bring a solution to the inner struggle, and in fact, causes an inner war. We must learn to make the distinction between actually being close to Hashem versus feeling like we are close. The light of the Shechina (Divine Presence) shines over our heads. The body is like a wick, and the oil is mitzvos and ma'asim tovim (good deeds). When we follow halacha, Hashem crosses over to us, so to speak.
