Description
p 108. The mitzvos were given to us to do, not just to feel good about. We naturally resist something that is forced upon us. Hashem is the source and center of the mitzvos, not us. All of Torah appeals to our daas (knowing), but on a tough day, the simple command of the Torah is what will get us out of bed. Reward and punishment is a lower level of motivation because it does not foster bonding and attachment. The level of the maamin (believer) is greater that the yodea (intellectual knower). An intelligent person will eventually recognize that there is an intelligent creator. Learning and doing mitzvos draw out our natural emunah.
