Razah D'Shabbos - P8 - Essay: Avodas Hashem B'Olamah Shel Shabbos
Gan (the garden of) Eden is not a place of menuchah (rest) - but the avodah (work) of Gan Eden is different from our avodah in this world. A life in accordance with Hashem's or with the nachash's (snake's) thinking? Shabbso in this world is a taste of "shvisas min harah" (resting from [all] evil). Shabbos is NOT a time to indulge the body [with excessive food and sleep]. On Shabbos the infusion of soul, the breath [which Hashem exhaled into Adam HaRishon] is not encumbered by the body. The purpose of kedushah (holiness) is not: don't eat/live, but: eat b'kedushah (in holiness). During the six days of the week we tend to live more in accordance with our bodily / nachash needs.
