The period of Maskilim (Enlightenment). The only thing the maskilim hated more than Torah was chassidus. Torah is compared to fire which illuminates and warms. Revealed Torah is water and hidden Torah is fire. R' Itzala Volozhin (the son of, and successor to, R' Chaim of Volozhin) had inspirational experiences with the Tzemach Tzeddek. The Tzemach Tzeddek was a strong believer in the ability of Torah and prayer to be a repair for anything.
