The midas ha'din (stringent divine justice) puts challenges in our way to determine if our sudden ratzon (will) to grow is for real. Hashem hides Himself and is with us in our obstacles. Moshe knew that Hashem was there in the clouds and darkness. Moshe gave each and every Jew the ability to get through any obstacle to reach Torah. Through the obstacles that are put in our way we can come closer to Hashem.
