In this Shiur we see the connection between the first teaching in the Likutay Maharan (the magnum opus of Rebbe Nachman) and Chanukah. The Greeks tried to strip us of our G-dliness. Olive oil, which is symbolic of Chochmos haTorah (Torah wisdom), was used to counteract the Greeks’ defilement. Yoseph Hatzadik (the righteous one) overcame his struggles by emulating Yaakov Avinu’s ability to see the deeper meanings behind everything in this world. The oil’s ability to burn for eight days was a demonstration that nature is only the outer layer of a deeply spiritual world. The incident of Yaakov Avinu and the small jars that he left behind was a preparation for the story of Chanukah.
