We are learning the first teaching in the Likutay Maharan (the magnum opus of Rabbi Nachman). A person with chen (grace) is a person others seek to please. The Jews' chen was transferred to the non-Jews, and only through the Torah can we recover our chen. Reading the messages that G-d sends through the events of our lives is a part of Torah. Esav looked at the externals, while Yaakov Avinu sought the deeper meanings of everything. We can find G-d even at the lowest levels of holiness.
