The only way to learn about Rebbe Nachman's life is through the writings of Reb Nosson. Rebbe Nachman was the great-grandson of the Baal Shem Tov. During the pregnancy, his mother spent almost all of her time at the grave of the Baal Shem Tov. His bris was on Shabbos HaGadol and he was named after his grandfather, Reb Nachman Horodenker. Rebbe Nachman's contribution to the world is that he would teach us to do teshuvah (returning to G-d) through simcha (joy).
