Rav Kook explains that the Akeidah (sacrifice of his beloved son) enabled Avraham to revisit his past. Hashem wants idol-worshippers to redirect their efforts towards good. The hardest part of a test from Hashem is that He conceals Himself from us. The greatest nachas (joy) Hashem has is when someone who is "off the derech" returns. It's much greater to have Yiras Hashem (fear of G-d) on a regular day than it is on Yom Kippur.
