The ideal relationship between Hashem and Bnei Yisrael is "face-to-face". In the midbar (desert) the relationship was "face-to-back". There was never a greater time of clarity than the midbar (desert). The avodah (spiritual work) wasn't as great in the eyes of Hashem, because they had witnessed so many miracles. Torah view is not product oriented. Torah is process oriented. The yetzer hara's (evil inclinations) goal is to get us to feel that Hashem has turned away from us.
