Kol Nidrei night the Berdichever tries to avert an evil decree through a “gift” to Hashem. Story of the woman who cut off her hair. Story of King who was lost in the forest, and only one wise man recognized him— only Bnei Yisrael believe in Hashem. The Shofar is an annual reminder of the coronation of Hashem, the King. Concealment and darkness must often come before light and revelation. We human beings can only tolerate Hashem’s goodness and light if He restricts it. What does “ma’avir rishon rishon” (forgives the first sins first) mean?
