How the Divrei Chaim on prepared for Shavuos. One who has emotional hang-ups or leanings can't possibly make objective intellectual decisions. K'lal Yisrael needed 7 weeks to remove the emotional impurities to be ready to accept the chochmah (wisdom) of the Torah. Each week represents another middah (character flaw) to work on in order to achieve refinement in even our lowest qualities. Ultimately we can come to Shavuos with a new nefesh (soul) allowing the Torah to penetrate us and make us better people.
