The amazing avodah of tefillah of R' Chaim was described by onlookers as inspiring. He led a famous Shala Shudis (third meal on Shabbos) which hundreds attended, and his "silent-Torah's", which would go on for hours. The whole Elul he would only speak in a special niggun (melody). Everyday he would disperse money to hundreds of poor people, even borrowing from his own account to give to others. As thousands of "coins" passed through his hands, he lived a frugal existence, never taking a penny for himself.
