Description

P.317. The nefesh Elokis (divine component of the soul) does not get involved in dvarim beteilim. The definition of "chochmas umos ha'olam" (wisdom of the nations of the world) has changed over time; this discussion focuses on "neutral," permitted material (e.g., math, science). One filled with chochmos ha'umos finds it more difficult to absorb Torah. Those who concentrate on secular wisdom are often so filled with yeishus (ego) and pride that there is no room for Torah; this can also apply to those who learn in order to showcase their knowledge. The source of secular wisdoms resides at a much lower level (still from Torah), which is called the under-side of kedushah (holiness). The Rebbe was talking about specifically studying things to make a living - this is somewhat different from today where College students have to take requirements not connected to their field of study. However, studying these chochmos for the specific purpose of making a living is different from "bitul Torah;" an even higher level is a person studies these topics to better understand the wonders of Hashem's world. For smart people, the desire to learn is greater than others' needs for physical pleasures.
