Our main job is to reveal the unity of Hashem in this world, feel His presence and experience the excitement of being a Jew. Through the festivals of Tishrei, and particularly Shemini Atzeres, Hashem gives us the power to serve Him the entire year. On Rosh Hashanah we feel how far we are from the King. Chesbon hanefesh (spiritual accounting) during the Aseres Yemei Teshuvah (Ten Days Of Repentance) detaches us from the grossness of this world. When our avodas Hashem is with love and desire, we are 'facing' Hashem.
