Nevi'im (prophets) in Tanach (Prophecies and Writings) talk about the world of action - a physical world: don't steal, don't kill, etc. Nowadays, after the nevi'im have left us, we are not prepared and able to receive the light of prophecy in this world of action. The earlier generations were able to to epxerience the light of prophecy in the world of action. All we have left is Tanach and the history we see: basic mussar (ethical teachings) and laws. Even though we keep mitzvos (commandments), the most essential part of us is deeply hidden. The denigration of ourselves at superbowl parties...even in a shul. The work of the Tannaim (early Talmudic sages) was to continue in the way of the prophets and reveal to us in feelings and thoughts the light of Hashem. The Tannaim drew the actual light of earlier generations in to the world of our intellect
