This book is for the humble of spirit and broken hearted. A person's nature is to rationalize. Mitzvos are no guarantee for atonement and can be extinguished by aveirahs (sins). Who can say their teshuvah has been accepted? A learned person knows how low they are. The only reason we don't die from shame is that no one knows what we're thinking. Even our highest joy in avodas Hashem should be with a broken heart at our own imperfection.
