Description

The sugya in Yoma 83a presents a controversy regarding the law of a choleh on Yom Kippur, does he fast or eat? The issue depends on the question: upon whom do we rely to establish that his life will be threatened if he does not eat? Rav Yannai maintains that we rely on the word of the choleh himself, even if he is contradicted by the physician, but if two doctors come to the same conclusion that he can fast, then he must fast. Mar bar Rav Ashi insists that we always rely on the choleh who claims he must eat. In the case where the choleh claims he can fast we will rely on the opinion of the physician who insists that he must eat. If, however, the choleh is supported by another physician, we will need two dr's to testify that he must eat.
