Description

The pikuach nefesh sugya at the end of Masechet Yoma establishes the principle of violating the Shabbat in order to save a life, i.e. for the sake of a Choleh She'yesh bo sakana. Even for a Safek Sakana we violate the Shabbas. The Rambam sees this violation of Shabbat as a chidush; we would not apply the universal principle of Pikuach Nefesh to Shabbos if not for this chiddush. The principle is derived from a separate Yalfusa from the verse V'Shamru Bnei Yisrael es HaShabbos. In this shiur we will try to analyze the Rambam in Chap II of Hil Shabbos. Special emphasis on the case of a Choleh who needs 8 days of treatment. Do we wait til Motzaei Shabbos & postpone his treatment so as to minimize Chillul Shabbos to one Shabbos instead of two?
