Description

The mishna permits moving a stone on Shabbat if the stone was ties down to a bucket and thereby functions as a kli. The Sugya presents a controversy between Rav Ami & Rav Asi regarding the permissibly of placing a stone on top of a barrel on Erev Shabbat so that the stone will serve as a cover for the barrel. The source of this controversy is a story about Rebby who instructed his students on Erev Shabbat to do an action to prepare stones so that they could be used on Shabbat as chairs to sit on. What was the nature of the action that Rebby required? According to Rav Ami the action had to be a significant one that would change the stone into a kli. Whereas Rav Asi would suffice with a first stage action which would certainly need a followup
