People aren't aware that Chanukkah marks the first time that Hazal had to cope with unprecedented challenges, without any Prophets to consult. There was no precedent for martyrdom, aspects of Shabbat warfare, reconsecrating a defiled Temple or even starting a Holiday without prophetic sanction. Lessons of courage and responsibility, faith and humility are embedded in the holiday.
