Description

We will study the three occasions of the mitzva of blowing the shofar, and what shofar qualifies for these three occasions. The mishna only records two opinions; the Gemara quotes a third. Rashi and the Rambam debate the nature and purpose of blowing the shofar and the chatzotzrot on a public fast day. In this shiur we will present one of Rav Y. D. Soloveichik's famous Yesodos: the cheftza shel mitzva must lend itself to the full-fledged, complete fulfillment of the mitzva, even though the kiyum HaGavra requires less. We will apply this to shofar, lulav, ner chanuka, and matzah.
