The sugya records two leshonos of Abaye's interpretation of the machlokes between Rebby Meir & Rebby Yehuda regarding the bounds of resolving the discrepancy between two witnesses who testify in a murder trial. In this shiur we begin our study of the nature of this controversy. Rava adamantly objects to both approaches offered by Abaye. His objection seems convincing: why work in favor of the witnesses at the expense of the accused? We will try to defend Abaye and explain the nature of the controversy between Abaye and Rava.
