During the fall and winter of 2011, there was much controversy in Israel over the concept of "Tzniyut" in public areas. Some religious Jews demanded increasing levels of separation between the sexes (including separate seating "mehadrin" bus lines) in order to maintain what they believe to be halachic requirements of modesty. Many secular Jews (who are accustomed to total mixing of the sexes even on the beaches) viewed this as persecution of women. This talk is meant to set the record straight, based on a careful reading of halachic sources.
