In this shiur we will explore the differences between the two versions of the Machloket between Abaye and Rava. In the first version the Gemara seems to find no way of reconciling Abaye with Rabanan or Rava with Reby Yose, whereas in the second version this goal of "reconciliation" is achievable. In this shiur we will use the Rishonim to reveal the different ways of understanding the two versions of Abaya, and the same for Rava.
