Description

The Ramban's exegetical mastery reaches new heights in his interpretation of the Aseret HaDibrot. He reads the fundamental tenets of Judaism into the words of "Anochi...", establishing what we are required to believe in this, the first of the Mitzvot of the 613. The Ramban's insights into the relationship between knowledge of God and the exodus from Egypt are critical not only for an adequate understanding of the words of the Torah in the first commandment, but also for our knowledge of our obligations as servants of the Almighty. In the second of the Dibrot, the Ramban takes issue with Rashi regarding the nature and meaning of this command. The shift of language from the plural to the singular is addressed by the Ramban in this section.
