Description

Demolishing a synagogue is a violation of a Lav that applies to the Beit HaMikdash and by extension to a "Mikdash MeAt". However, as the Rambam formulates this prohibition it only applies when done "Derech HaShchasa" in a destructive manner. When destroying a shul for the purpose of building another, more spacious one, the prohibition doesn't apply. Rav Chisda establishes a Rabbinic prohibition: we will not allow demolition until a second shul is built to replace this one. This shiur will analyze the nature of Rav Chisda's prohibition in the light of two concepts, the obligation incumbent upon the city to equip the city with a Beit HaKnesset, and the obligation of communal prayer.
