Description

The topic of Chanukah in the second perek of Mesechet Sabbath deals with which candles may or may not be used to light on Chanukah. The Gemara delves into the basis of the Chanukah holiday; i.e, on which miracle or event is the holiday derived. "Mai Chanukah;" where does the miracle of Chanukah come from? While Chazal may have played down the military victory of Chanukah, and focused more upon the "pach shemen" which miraculously lasted for eight days of light, the answer may not be so clear cut.
