At dinners, especially in past generations, a “finger bowl” containing water with a flower petal floating in it would be passed around towards the end of the meal and the diners would dip their fingers in it. The question is: Does one fulfill the mitzvah of mayim acharonim by this method? The Kaf Hachaim discusses this question (Kaf Hachaim 181:9) and states that if there was a lot of water in the “finger-bowl” it would then be permitted, although this is not the preferred method for mayim acharonim.
