As we continue our study of the פרשת החובה and the חטאות הפנימיות, we move to the next passage which is Halakhically interpreted as a חטאת brought by the בית דין הגדול when they issue an errant ruling, a majority of the nation acts on their permission and then the mistake is realized. We pose the following questions: How do we know that this passage (starting in 4:13) is about a case of mistaken instruction? Why does this then reflect back to the first case (4:1-12) and mean that that חטאת כהן המשיח is also about an errant ruling on his part, followed by his own acting based on that same mistake? Why is the כהן גדול elevated to such a status that he (alone) is the only individual whose actions could necessitate such כפרה? And if the כהן גדול is "like the צבור" - why is his חטאת detailed first - it should follow the חטאת הצבור? All of this and more...
