The Torah obligates us to hold a "day of blasting" - without specifying what we use to make that blast, what sort of blasts we are to make nor how many. So..how did we get from "Yom Teruah" to "30 sounds"? We follow the Sifra (Torat Kohanim), the Midrash Tannaim on Vayyikra, to see the interpretive process which brings us to our contemporary practice.
