Description

The unusual story of the "Wood gatherer" which appears towards the end of the post-Meraglim commands, has its own Halakhic and exegetical challenges; yet the fact that we have to refer to him as "the wood gatherer" (מקושש) instead of by his name gives us the opportunity to explore the reasons for anonymity in Tanakh. We suggest six different reasons why characters remain unnamed, ranging from the insignificance of their identity to the story to the most deliberate example - when anonymity is deliberately imposed as a punitive measure.
