Description

In the opening of the Parsha, Avraham is very adamant about purchasing Maarat Hamachpelah instead of receiving it as a gift. In fact, the purchase of Sarah's burial place is the first act of kinyan (acquisition) in the Torah and therefore the root of kinyan on a Torah level. What is the meaning of kinyan and why is this the paradigm of kinyan? To understand this we turn to the primary kinyan in the Gemara, the kinyan of kiddushin (marriage). By examining the connections between these two primary acquisitions, we reveal the essence of what a kinyan is truly about and how it relates to the most central relationships both in our lives...and in our deaths. (Part of HaMidrasha at QC, OU-JLIC's Torah learning program for women at Queens College.)
