Description

In this Hashkafa shiur for Shmini Atzeres we seek the key to understanding the nature of this day. What is the unique Simcha of שמיני עצרת & how do we understand the integration of Simchas HaTorah and Shmini Atzeres? We will base our discussion on the insights of the Gaon of Vilna as his words are explained by his disciples. This embellishments of the words of the Gaon are collected in an essay by Rav Shapiro in his Sefer חזון למועד on the Moadim. Our main motifs are the singularity of the People and of the Land. How are these two fundamental concepts connected to Shmini Atzeres? Why does the Gaon see in the verse in Shir HaShirim (1:4) an allusion to this Moed? How is it connected to the progression from Yetzias Mitzrayim to כניסה לארץ?
