'Happy are the people who know the teruah...' To know the teruah, explains Rav Hutner, means to understand that the shofar is both a groan and a cry of joy, and to understand that this same paradox is at the nature of what it means to be human. Only by understanding what the rabbis meant when they said 'better for man not have been created', can we understand that in fact it indeed 'very good' that man was created
