In this Parsha & Halacha shiur for Shelach we will study the source and purpose of Tachanun (נפילת אפיים) and its Halachos. Rabenu Bechai derives this Halacha from a verse in our Parsha and gives us an insight as to the intention inherent in נפילת אפיים. We will study a story in the aggadeta in Bava Metzia regarding R' Eliezer and the two interpretations of this story and how his wife succeeded in preventing R' Eliezer from doing נפילה. Our basis issue is: is Tachanun and integral part of the Amidah, or an independent prayer unto itself? We will investigate the practical implications of these two definitions, and the possibility that both are correct.
