Description

In Parshat Shoftim we are introduced to the mitzvah of appointing a Jewish king in the Land of Israel. The Rambam records this as a definitive mitzvah and puts it into the context of both wiping out Amalek and building the Beit HaMikdash. What is the connection between these three mitzvot? What is the nature of this process? We examine the role of a Jewish king and analyze the successes and failures of Melech Shaul and Melech Shlomo specifically in this context. (Part of HaMidrasha at QC, OU-JLIC's Torah learning program for women at Queens College.)
