Description

In this shiur on the methodology of Pshuto shel Mikrah, we will derive from the Ramban on Parshas Nizavim a new phenomenon, the ambiguous phrase, הכתוב הבינוני. The principle is that the Torah uses a word or a phrase that can be interpreted in two ways. 'And you shall return to Hashem', is this a command or a Divine promise for the future. When we use ambiguous language we are at fault for being unclear. But when Hashem does so it is a deliberate way of either teaching us two things, e.g. both a mandate as well as a promise, or a condition, e.g. one of two things will comes to pass depending upon our being worthy of Divine compassion. We will investigate various sections in the Torah where this methodology is employed.
