In this first installment of a four-part series, we examine the sources in the Torah that may suggest a Toraic obligation to pray, along with the seminal comments of Midrash Halakhah that have been invoked to support that position. Finally, we look at the Rambam's presentation of Mitzvat Tefillah in Sefer haMitzvot and Ramban's critique and his alternate formulation of the obligation.
